HOW TO DISPOSE OF PRESCRIPTIONS, MEDICINE & OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUGS  Recycle walkers, wheelchairs, etc.

In response to a growing demand for a safe and convenient way to dispose of household medications, your local pharmacies and the SLO County IWMA have teamed up to provide a free home generated disposal program.

What is Home Generated Medicine?
Prescription drugs, including lotions and ointments used for home medical care.

What items are NOT accepted?
No needles or sharps (the pharmacy has a separate program for needles), no illegal drugs, no thermometers, no medicine from businesses and no personal care products such as shampoo, soap, etc.

Who can use this program?
Any resident of San Luis Obispo County may dispose of their unwanted medicine through the program. Businesses and health care professionals cannot use this program.

How does the program work?
All pharmacies are participating and will either have an in-store kiosk and/or provide a mail back envelope for free.

How do you use the in-store kiosk?
Place your home generated medicine in the kiosk. You may want to place all your unwanted pills in a small plastic bag and then bring that bag to place in the kiosk.

Note that some kiosks can not accept controlled substances. At those locations the pharmacy will provide a mail back envelope for the proper disposal of controlled substances. Controlled substances include Tylenol with Codeine, Valium, Vicodin, and Percocet. A list of common controlled substances is provided at the end of this section.
