Hours: 10 hours per week

About IWMA & Position Summary:
The Integrated Waste Management Authority (IWMA) provides education, technical assistance, and policy coordination to support sustainable waste management throughout San Luis Obispo County. Our work supports compliance with state regulations such as SB 1383 and promotes best practices in recycling, composting, and landfill diversion.
IWMA is seeking a part-time Social Media Intern to help expand our digital outreach and increase community engagement through social platforms. You will work collaboratively with our team to develop campaigns and content, meeting regularly. This is an ideal role for a communications, environmental studies, or marketing student interested in gaining experience in public sector media and environmental education.
Responsibilities:
- Create and schedule weekly posts across platforms (Instagram - @recycle_slocounty, Facebook - sloIWMA). We would like to expand to TikTok as well although we have no current presence.
- Design graphics, capture compelling photographs and video and draft captions focused on waste reduction, recycling, and organics education.
- Develop & maintain a consistent posting aesthetic using our branding guide.
- Monitor/respond to messages/comments with professionalism and accuracy.
- Track and report monthly engagement metrics (likes, reach, shares, etc.).
- Assist with developing campaigns tied to key regulations (e.g., SB 1383, AB 341).
- Attend occasional events to capture media for outreach (optional/with notice).
- Help brainstorm creative and culturally relevant outreach ideas tailored to diverse SLO County communities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of current social media trends (especially short-form video).
- Basic graphic design skills (Canva) and comfort using Excel or for basic tracking.
- Interest in sustainability, waste management, or environmental communication.
- Clear and professional writing style.
- Familiarity with San Luis Obispo County communities a plus.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
