Disposing of Hot Coals

A charcoal grill with glowing coals and some flame, ready for barbecuing.

After a BBQ this summer, please make sure to dispose of your coals properly. Hot/smoldering coals can be a fire hazard in our waste streams if improperly thrown away. To get rid of coals and ash:

  1. Allow them to cool for 48 hours, or pour water onto them and stir carefully.
  2. Wait until they are no longer smoldering.
  3. Once the coals and ash have fully cooled, wrap them in aluminum foil or place them in a small metal container, such as a coffee can. Do not place them near paper, or anything else that could catch fire.
  4. Place the container in the outdoor trash.

A garbage truck caught fire in South County recently because of improperly disposed of coals. Thank you for following these instructions and helping us avoid fires!
