Disposing of Hot Coals

After a BBQ this summer, please make sure to dispose of your coals properly. Hot/smoldering coals can be a fire hazard in our waste streams if improperly thrown away. To get rid of coals and ash:
- Allow them to cool for 48 hours, or pour water onto them and stir carefully.
- Wait until they are no longer smoldering.
- Once the coals and ash have fully cooled, wrap them in aluminum foil or place them in a small metal container, such as a coffee can. Do not place them near paper, or anything else that could catch fire.
- Place the container in the outdoor trash.
A garbage truck caught fire in South County recently because of improperly disposed of coals. Thank you for following these instructions and helping us avoid fires!
