How do I recycle batteries in SLO County?
Thank you for doing your part in ensuring waste collection workers are safe and hazard-free! When batteries are disposed of in curbside trash and recycling bins, the risk of fire increases dramatically. Did you know that SLO County waste haulers had THREE truck fires due to lithium-ion batteries in just three weeks? Thankfully, everyone is okay! Batteries also contain toxic metals and corrosive materials that contimate the environment when not properly processed. That's why, here in SLO County, we have programs to help you easily dispose of batteries - the right way!

Businesses must request an appointment to dispose here.
RESIDENTS may dispose of batteries at the following locations for FREE:
Household Batteries (Alkaline) - AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, Lithium-Ion Batteries, Rechargeable Batteries, Button Cell Batteries
Bring these to any of the following locations:
- Retailers that sell household batteries, such as: box stores, grocery stores, hardware stores, pharmacies. Find a location near you!
- A Household Hazardous Waste Facility in SLO County. Find a location near you!
Car Batteries
Bring these to any of the following locations:
- Any Auto Part store
- Absolute Auto Tech - 805 Capitolio Way, San Luis Obsispo, CA
- Battery Systems - 8165 El Camino Real, Atascadero, CA
Battery Chargers
Drop battery chargers off at an Electronics drop-off site for FREE! These contain metals and corrosive chemicals that will contiamnate the environment if not properly processed. Please do not place these in a trash bin or any curbside bin. Find an electronic waste disposal facility near you!
EV Batteries
Contact the manufacturer to properly recycle.

As you can see from the images above, lithium-ion batteries can cause fires in garbage and reycling trucks, and at facilities. Such instances occur from time to time, however it is easily preventable!
