HZI Spring 2024 Compost Giveaway

Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) is hosting their annual free compost giveaway this Saturday, April 6th. HZI's Kompogas Anaerobic Digestion Facility is the final destination for organic waste here in SLO County. Their facility (the first of its kind in the US!) processes our food scraps, lawn waste and food soiled paper, and turns it into high-quality compost, fertilizer and biogas.  Biogas produced by the digester is used as a green energy source, to power the facility and put enough electricity into the grid to power 600 homes. Their compost is OMRI and CalRecycle Organic Certified, and great for application in both private gardening and commercial agriculture.

Come participate in our circular system by picking up a FREE load of organic compost that's made from your food scraps!

Saturday, April 6th 2024, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at KOMPOGAS-SLO facility located at 4300 Old Santa Fe Road in San Luis Obispo.

Upon arrival, check in with one of their volunteers in yellow safety vests. They will guide you to the right queue depending if you are shoveling your own at one of the two self-serve kiosks, or if you come in a pickup truck or with a trailer, you will be loaded with the loader in the compost hall. If you are coming with a pickup or trailer, they ask that you please bring a tarp to secure the load, to avoid having compost all over the roads. You will be turned away and asked to get a tarp if you don't have one.
