The Summit doesn't end when the sessions do. Choose from three optional tours for a behind-the-scenes look at local operations, and/or join us for Yappy Hour to network, exchange ideas, and build connections.

Directly following the conference, attendees are invited to participate in guided tours of several county facilities and partner organizations that are making a meaningful impact in waste reduction and resource recovery.
Tours will take place from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and offer a unique opportunity to see innovative solid waste programs in action. Space is limited. Please note transportation to the tour locations is NOT provided, and participants are expected to drive to the locations directly following the Summit.
Kanadevia Inova
Have you ever wondered what happens to your organics after placing them in your green cart? Wonder no more after this field trip to Kanadevia Inova, SLO’s anaerobic digester facility! From intake to final compost product, learn about how SLO County’s organics are processed into two crucial resources for our community.
Since 2018 Kanadevia Inova has processed on average 42,000 tons of waste and produced nearly 3 million cubic meters of biogas every year – enough to power over 600 homes in SLO County.
SLO Food Bank
SLO Foodbank
The SLO Foodbank works with local agency partners and edible food generators across San Luis Obispo County to recover edible food and deliver that food to residents experiencing food insecurity.
Hunger is a significant issue in San Luis Obispo County, exacerbated by the high costs of living, with nearly a third of all households in San Luis Obispo County not making the income required to meet their basic needs. The Foodbank also fills in gaps not filled by federal nutrition programs for residents that do not meet eligibility requirements.
This tour will take a look at the Foodbank’s headquarters in San Luis Obispo and show participants how the Foodbank handles intake, sorting, and distribution of edible food. This tour will also go over how the Foodbank sources the food it provides from local gleaning programs, to donations, to food recovery.
Closed Los Osos Landfill
Come see the closed Los Osos Landfill, located on Turri Road. This 25-acre landfill was active from 1958 until its closure in 1988, while the waste that was buried during its lifetime remains in place today.
The landfill was unlined, and as such presents significant environmental risks without proper maintenance. The County of San Luis Obispo manages the closed landfill site, with infrastructure in place to mitigate its impact to local ecosystems and public health. Learn about the lifecycle of a landfill and all that the County is doing to manage the site nearly 40 years after its closure, as a stark reminder that the waste we produce never really goes away.
