Packaging Face-Off: Takeout Containers

When dining takeout, there are a few different types of container your food may be packaged in.
Expanded polystyrene (aka Styrofoam) takeout containers are not recyclable, and belong in the trash. Buisnesses in SLO County are not allowed to sell Styrofoam per state and local ordinance, so if you do receive a Styrofoam container, give us a call!
All types of paper takeout containers also belong in the trash. They often are coated with a thin layer of plastic, that is a contaminant at our local recycling and composting facilities.
Rigid plastic takeout containers, like clear plastic clamshells or black plastic lidded bowls, are recyclable in the blue bin. Make sure they are clean and dry!
Aluminum takeout containers are also recyclable once they are clean. Aluminum is infinitley recyclable, meaning that old aluminum products can be turned into new aluminum products without having to use any new materials. Aluminum is often the most environmentally responsible choice of material for this reason.
The best choice is to bring your own container and ask the restaurant to fill it instead of using a single-use one!
