IWMA PLANS MORRO BAY HAZARDOUS WASTE FACILITY RELOCATION; ALTERNATE DROP-OFF SITES AVAILABLE
San Luis Obispo County, CA – The San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority (IWMA) is moving forward with plans to relocate the Morro Bay Household Hazardous Waste Facility to a new location. The current site, at the former wastewater treatment plant, is slated for demolition and all existing operations must be relocated. As part of this process, hazardous waste collection operations at the current facility will close, with a final day of residential drop-off on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
The IWMA is actively working to secure a new facility location that will be convenient for area residents to safely dispose of household hazardous wastes. Residents may also continue to use any of the Household Hazardous Waste Facility locations below:

Residents of San Luis Obispo County may drop off up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per visit, at no cost.
Residents are also encouraged to make use of free takeback options offered by retailers of the following hazardous items:
· Batteries
· Fluorescent Light Bulbs
· Latex Paint
· Prescription Medication
· Sharps (Needles)
· Mercury-containing Thermostats
By local Ordinance, these items are accepted throughout SLO County by any retailer that sells them. For more information, please visit: www.iwma.com/retail-take-back-for-consumers.
Businesses can continue to make an appointment to dispose of hazardous, electronic, and Universal Waste through the Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) program, using our online appointment request portal at www.iwma.com.
